Description
To understand the effects of the armour see Stats and Enchantments
The Blacksmith is the first upgrade in Rogue Legacy. The Blacksmith sells armour and weapons. The blacksmith has 15 items for equipment category, including swords, helmets, chestplates, limbs, and capes. You must find blueprints from chests to unlock more equipment, and purchase them to be able to equip them (more than 1 playthrough is needed to acquire all the blueprints.) The Blacksmith will only start with Squire Sword, Squire Helm, Squire Chest, and Squire Limbs unlocked, though they must still be purchased to be used.
The items mainly increase in strength/usefulness as they go across from left to right, and from the first row to the second, however the third row often forfeits general power for a bonus attribute (e.g. the first items on the third row give reduced stats, but +1 Vampirism).
Swords mainly provide increased melee damage. Helms mainly provide health and mana. Chest equipment mainly provides armour. Limb equipment mainly provides magic damage. Capes mainly provide different sorts of bonus attributes.
Blueprint Locations
Blueprints can be found in ordinary chests very rarely by chance; the primary way to find them is in iron chests (found throughout the dungeon) and from golden chests which result from beating minibosses (Botis, Barbatos & Amon, Stolas & Focalor, and Sallos). Fairy chests will never drop blueprints.
Each area unlocks a new set of blueprints you can find - entering a new area can help you find new blueprints. Note, however, that minibosses appear to allow you to find any sort of blueprint available to you in your playthrough.
On your first playthrough of the game, you will find blueprints up to the Sky equipment (unless the player opens a Golden chest in the secret room activated by Calypso's Compass, which can give higher-level equipment), but the best equipment can only be found in the Dungeon or by defeating minibosses. In NG+, after beating the final boss for the first time, all of the equipment save the dark equipment becomes available; you will mostly find the new equipment in chests, but will rarely find blueprints for older equipment instead, especially once you have found all the new equipment.
The blueprints for the Dark equipment can be found after defeating the final boss in NG+ by fighting minibosses such as Potis, Barbatos & Amon, Stolas & Focalor, and Sallos. They can also be found in NG+ using Calypso's Compass.
